SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE REVANCHISM OF ATHENS,
THE MACEDONIANISM OF BELGRADE
AND THE NIHILISM OF SOFIA
/THE AEGEAN FUGITIVES
-
40S AND THE
80
OF THE
ΧΧΊΉ
CENTURY/
/summary/
Since its very constitution the structure of the Third Bulgarian State
had been disrupted. The battles for independence of those Bulgarians who
remained under the cruel suffocation of the occupier filled another tragic
page in the book of the Bulgarian history
-
the fugitives question. Thousands
of Bulgarians were forced to leave their places of origin and to look for
escape in Bulgaria. This process, which started immediately after the Berlin
congress
/1878/,
was spurred on by the bloody Bulgarian uprisings and
armed conflict in the first half of the XXth century. The Second World War
and the consequent Civil War in Greece lead to this last and most massive
demographic turbulence among our compatriots in Aegean Macedonia.
The military and political cataclysms on the Balkans in
1941
incited the
aspiration for liberty within the souls of the Aegean Bulgarians. The
cal
for
national identity within them lead to the resurrection of the Bulgarian reli¬
gious and enlightenment affairs, to the establishment of the cultural and
enlightenment Bulgarian club and the Macedonian-Bulgarian Committee
as a national political organization. The peak of this process of protection
of the Bulgarian cause was the armed repulse against the united front of
the Greek and the Yugoslavian partisans. Their destructive attacks of
1943
resulted in a new wave of fugitives towards of Bulgaria. It had been initiat¬
ed by the violence exerted by EAM and
ELAS
towards the end of
1944
and
by the massive repressions of the newly established Athenian regime.
Thousands of Bulgarians from the north of Greece were forced to escape
in our country.
The influx of fugitives made Sofia face some very responsible issues
of humanitarian, social and national character. The ninth of September
1944
became the dividing line within the attitude of the Bulgarian authori¬
ties towards the fugitives. If until then they had been considered brothers,
after that, towards a part of them, the most patriotic part of them, towards
254
Somewhere between the reuanchism of Athens,
the macedonianism of Belgrade and the nihilism of Sofia
those who fought for the Bulgarian cause, a class-based revolutionary
revengeful attitude was demonstrated. These fighters fell under the attacks
of the repressive mechanism of the Fatherland Front after being qualified
as the great-Bulgarian chauvinists .
In these times of complex international attitude towards Bulgaria
after the end of the war, of thus declared Soviet support for Belgrade
regarding the Macedonian question and of so massive Yugoslavian pres¬
sure for the forced recognition of a Macedonian nation , as well as pres¬
sure for the tearing off of the
Pirin
region, the headquarters in Sofia made
some very serious mistakes impairing the national interests of Bulgaria. One
of these was the accepting of the proposal dated June 16th,
1945
made
by Yugoslavia for the accommodation of all fugitives from Aegean
Macedonia, who had found rescue and shelter in Bulgaria. The emissaries
who came from Skopje began an intensive propaganda not only among
the new, but also among the permanent fugitives. Some
17 000
people
were transferred to
Vardar
Macedonia. Regardless of their lack of desire to
go living under the Serbian rule the Bulgarian authorities uprooted them
forcedly. Only a small part of them were tricked into this trip by the abun¬
dant promises of those campaigning for a better life. By this act the
Bulgarian and the political elite created an unprecedented event by chas¬
ing away part of its compatriots. The Aegean Bulgarians transferred to
Yugoslavia were rooted and settled in some very poor and remote parts of
the country. Surrounded by distrust and hostility, devoid of some basic
human and civil rights these people were forced to give up their Bulgarian
nationality. Their massive discontent and their desire to go back to Bulgaria
forced the Yugoslavian authorities to undertake some very radical meas¬
ures. In the end of January
1948
some
7300
people, some the most con¬
vinced and persistent Bulgarians, were deported to remote Voivodina and
then settled in the villages of Gakovo, Krushevle and Somborsko. Once
taken there these people were forced to work on the local farms, under
very rigid limited regime and under the constant pressure to give up their
Bulgarian identity. Once fallen into the merciless Yugoslavian trap
-
the only
hope they had left was Bulgaria. Thus these people attacked the Bulgarian
embassy in Belgrade with a wave of written applications for shelter and
help to return to their home country.
The unexpected repulse of the Aegean people in Gakovo and
Krushevle forced the Yugoslavian authorities to come up with a new deci¬
sion so as to break their will in two. In March
1949
some
6000
of them were

София
transported accompanied by the police to Skopje and then settled into
small groups in different places. Around
200
families remained in Gakovo.
Nevertheless, the desire of the Aegean people to get back to Bulgaria did
not disappear, and the wave of applications and delegations before the
Bulgarian embassy increased. The authorities responded with house
searches, arrests, exile and prison. The Bulgarian passports issued to the
Bulgarians by the Bulgarian embassy were confiscated and this was a
harsh violation of the international laws. Batteries of hindrances were put to
stop these people from going back to their country. It was not before
1955
when some
440
families managed to return to Bulgaria, while the rest were
forced to share the fate of their brothers in
Vardar
Macedonia and be
included in the denationalization process.
The Civil war in Greece
/1946-1949/
and the defeat lead to the
next drain of Bulgarian population away from Aegean Macedonia. The
55
881
who migrated were dispersed in different East-European countries. Of
these
19 912
were our compatriots, the so called Macedonians . In these
years of migration, among people unknown to them, they saw Bulgaria as
their home, the same home their fathers and grandfathers had dreamed of
before them. Many of them had relatives and family in Bulgaria, and
because of that they wanted to go back even more. Instead of having its
heart and territory open for everyone who wanted to settle in our country,
Sofia applied an entry access at the case by case basis. Using this
Bulgarian reservedness, the Yugoslavian propaganda deployed its aggres¬
sive and corrosive activity, seeding Macedonianism most of all among the
young.
The theoretical evolution of the Bulgarian Communist Party regard¬
ing the Macedonian question walked ahead of its practical steps regard¬
ing its attitude towards the Macedonian political emigrants. The party
remained inconsistent, reserve and distant, and because of that only
around one fifth /4O00/ managed to get back to Bulgaria. This was the sec¬
ond time when Bulgaria betrayed our Aegean brothers rejecting to most of
them the right to have a home country. The remaining part of these peo¬
ple
-
victims of the Greek political emigration faced a tough decision
-
to
remain in these foreign countries forever or to head to
Vardar.
Most of them
chose the second option, because thus they could be among the people
they knew in the PR of Macedonia and closer to the places they were born.
But they had to pay a high price for the choice they made
-
to suppress all
that was Bulgarian in them and to play Macedonians .
