It is based on local and for¬ eign historical sources, either newly found or not used before. They vary from clerical documents and letters to marginal notes, beadrolls and inscriptions, in¬ cluding those on artefacts and churches. In order to meet the needs of the present study the author has processed, systematized and analysed materials which come mainly from the archives of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and that of Je¬ rusalem, the monasteries on Mount Athos as well as other major church and secular institutions. Its chronological boundaries are defined by the change in the statute of the Turnovo Patriarchate and its inclusion as a metropolis in the Patriarchate of Constantinople at the end of the 14й1 and the beginning of 1 5th с up to the declaration of Bulgarian church independence in 1870. As far as matters of church are concerned, for more than four and a half centuries Bulgarian lands had been administered by the Archbishopric of Ochrid, the Serbian Patriarchate of Ipek and the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the dio¬ cese of which included the largest part of the Patriarchate of Turnovo church district. During the centuries of Ottoman domination Turnovo remained the big¬ gest Episcopal department in Bulgarian lands and one of the most authoritative in the hierarchy of Constantinople Patriarchy. Despite the cardinal changes in the church hierarchy and geography of the Balkans after the Ottoman conquest, which affected the church of Turnovo, the latter preserved, be it in a highly distorted form, some major traits from the previous period. Its spacious diocese, which covered the territory of the Patri¬ archate from the end of the 14 1 с included vast territories from the Danube in the north to the lower reaches of the Maritsa River in the south thus embracing a considerable part of Bulgarian orthodox congregation. Its rich heritage charac¬ teristic of its patriarchal statute invariably assigned to the Metropolis of Turnovo primary rank in Bulgarian lands. This is evidenced by some information in the lists of eparchies in the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In its hierarchy Turnovo was preceded only by departments with ancient church history or by those di¬ rectly associated with the work of the Holy Apostles such as Kessaria, Ephesus, Iraklea, Nikomidia, etc. The prelates of Turnovo held the respective leading po¬ sition in the episcopacy of Constantinople during the 15th-19th с For the whole period that has been explored in the study the prelates of Turnovo were titled following the exact pattern issued by the Patriarchate of Constantinople vestry as formal address to the patriarchs of Turnovo during the last decades of the 14th c. 475 The Patriarchate of Constantinople addressed the metropolitan of Turnovo in the following manner: „Ιερότατε Μητροπολίτα Τορνόβου, Ύπέρτιμε, και ΊΒξαρχε πάσης Βουλγαρίας, εν Άγίψ Πνεΰματι αγαπητέ αδελφέ, πανι συλλειτουργέ... (Most Holy metropolitan of Turnovo, Highly esteemed and exarch of all Bulgaria in the name of Holy Ghost beloved brother and fellow God s servant. ..). This formally accepted titling of the prelate of Turnovo placed him among the notables of the major church centres in the Balkans of this epoch who administered theologically and also provided support for parts of Bulgarian population. The name list of Turnovo metropolitans has been specified and is pre¬ sented in chronological succession starting from the end of the 1 6th с up to 1870. Special emphasis is laid on those who realized splendid church career and man¬ aged to become Ecumenical patriarchs or strove to ascend the patriarchal throne. Some of them, such as Cyril III (June - July 1652, March 1654), Gerasimus II (1673-1674), Parthenius IV (1657-1662, 1665-1667, 1671-1673, 1675-1676, 1684-1685), Athanasius V (1709-1711) and Constantius II (August 18th 1834- September 26th 1835), advanced to the rank of patriarchs and decided the fate not only of Bulgarians but also of Serbs, Romanians, Russians and Greeks. The high status of Turnovo notables is evidenced by the order in which they signed important documents of the Patriarchate having to do not only with the usual transfer of people from the episcopacy but also with decisions of his¬ torical significance for the whole Greco-Orthodox world. The chronological study of the order in which the metropolitans of Turnovo put their signatures under acts of the Patriarchate.leads to an important conclusion. During the 15th and 16th с the documents were signed in accordance with the primary status of the Metropolis of Turnovo in the hierarchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Sometimes they signed synodical documents right after the Patriarch. In the fol¬ lowing centuries some retreat from this practice can also be observed and the signatures of Turnovo notables under acts of the Patriarchate come later in the sequence than usual. Probably it results from particular circumstances that had to do with personal qualities, relations with the Patriarch, attempts to ascend the patriarchal throne, etc. The metropolitans of Turnovo participated actively in the activities of the Holy Synod in Constantinople. In some cases the documents of the Patriarchate vestry were signed by authorized prelates. Those were usually clerics of high standing closer to the Patriarch - the Grand Ritorus, the Grand Logothetus and the Grand Sakellarius (high-ranking officials of the Patriarchate) or notables from significant church centres. 476 The role and position which they held in the system of the Patriarchate of Constantinople is also evidenced by their appointment and function as patriar¬ chal exarches. As such they settled issues of dispute on Mount Athos, adminis¬ tered the Ugrovlahian Metropolis, applied sanctions to bishops who were found guilty and also carried out Episcopal and metropolitan elections. Some of them were ephors to the Holy Synod of prelates from other major church centres. As a rule, those appointed to the position of metropolitans of Turnovo were cler¬ ics of proven merit who observed the canon and left their mark in church liv¬ ing. Many of them were erudites, writers, theologians, composers who became famous throughout the Greco-Orthodox world. The research on their transfer shows that they ascended the Turnovo throne coming either from a major centre of Christianity or were elected by the high-ranking officials of the Patriarchate. There are quite a few cases when metropolitans of Turnovo headed major church centres higher up in the hierarchy of the Patriarchate. There are also representatives of the Episcopacy of Turnovo who became active leaders or participants in the most significant anti-Ottoman acts of Bulgar¬ ians and Greeks. Metropolitan Dionisius Rally, for whose activities some new information has been gathered and introduced for scholarly purposes, comes out as the undisputed organizer and leader of the First Turnovo Uprising in 1598. This tradition was followed by Cyril Spanos, a successor of his from the 17th c, who held secret talks with the Catholic archbishop Petar Parchevich. In the first half of the 19th с Yoannikyus, the Metropolitan of Turnovo, was hanged on sus¬ picion of being involved in the preparation of the Greek uprising. The organization and government of the Metropolis of Turnovo followed the exact model of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In both institutions there were identical administrative services and practices which can be accounted for with reference to the high position which the Turnovo department held in the system of the Patriarchate. The metropolitans of Turnovo had their central Episcopal department - St. St. Apostles Petar and Pavel church in Turnovo and a second residence in Arbanassi. Their ecclesiastical activities in Arbanassi were carried out in the churches of St. Dimitrius, of St. Archangels Michael and Gavrail, of St. Athanasius, of St. George, of St. Nikolas and of The Holy Virgin as shown by the epigraphic material from these temples as well as by some written records. The presence of Turnovo prelates in Arbanassi had to do mainly with the ongo¬ ing activities of the Nativity Church and the monastery complex near it. The rights and authority of Turnovo metropolitans can also be studied in relation to some activities of social benefit, which they undertook such as the renovation and maintenance of churches, monasteries and schools in the vast eparchy. An important aspect of the activity of Turnovo metropolitans is their opposition to any form of Catholic propaganda. They initiated this opposition 477 and remained the true pillars of Orthodoxy in the Balkans. The very first activi¬ ties in that direction at the beginning of the 17th с are associated with the names of the Turnovo metropolitans Gavriil (1611-1626) and Macarius (1626-1644). Apart from home affairs the metropolitans of Turnovo were also involved in settling international issues of paramount importance for the whole Greco- Orthodox world. Preserving the Holy Land for the orthodoxy can probably be pointed out as the most significant of them all. Donations for the Patriarchate of Jerusalem were constantly gathered in the Metropolis of Turnovo at the end of the 17th and the first half of the 1 8th с Due to the material support from Bulgarian lands the Patriarchate paid off its taxes to the sultan thus keeping control over the Holy Land. That is how even when deprived of their own church and clerical guidance Bulgarians still paid their tribute in order to keep Orthodoxy alive The present study also explores the relations of the Metropolis of Turnovo to the whole Greco-Orthodox community and to the Catholic West. The research is based on the church and diplomatic missions and contacts of the metropolitans Ignatius, Dionisius Rally, Cyril III Spanos, etc. It should also be noted that the study traces for the first time the history of the four episcopacies of the Metropolis of Turnovo - Presláv, Cherven, Lovech and Vratsa. The names of fifteen bishops, who come from different episcopacies of Turnovo eparchy and have not been known so far in the science of history, have been highlighted. When discussing the episcopacy of Vratsa, the former belief that its origin and inclusion in the Metropolis of Turnovo goes back to the 18th с has been corrected. The documents analysed in the study indisputably trace that event to the 17th с When presenting the episcopacy of Cherven special emphasis is laid on the establishment of a patriarchal exarchate in its eparchy in the territory of the village of Poroishte, Razgrad district (Αρβανιτοχώρι) in 1642. That is how the issue concerning the statute of exarchates as units of church organization in Bulgarian lands under the domination of the Patriarchate of Constantinople is brought to the foreground for the first time in Bulgarian historiography. The results of the present scholarly research point to an irrefutable con¬ clusion - the Metropolis of Turnovo and its episcopacies remained the most authoritative Bulgarian church department and atrae centre of Bulgarian clerical life under Ottoman domination. 478
